We are delighted that Professor Vusi Gumede, Head of TMALI, will act as discussant. Dr. Oloruntoba’s book explores the resurgence of regionalism in response to a faltering multilateral trading system, with focus on the governance of trade between the Global North and Global South in the context of the EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreements. Oloruntoba looks specifically at the case of EU-Nigeria relations, examining the potential implications of the EPA agreements on Nigeria’s economy. He emphasises the importance of regional integration and regional trading agreements as necessary conditions for facilitating Nigerian economic development both at the national, regional and continental levels. Oloruntoba’s book also explores the history of EU- Africa relations as well as the dynamics of power that underpinned the EU-ACP EPA negotiations. The author underlines the imperativeness of credible institutions, building state capacity, diversification of the economy as well as trading partners as necessary conditions for fostering socio-economic development in Nigeria and Africa in general.
