Unit on Africa-Canada Relations (ACRE)
The Unit on Africa-Canada Relations (ACRE) came out of the recognition that it is important to strengthen ties between the African Union, its member states and Canada. The urgent need exists for the parties to foster a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of their relationships. The world is increasingly interconnected. African countries and Canada should move with the times to renew and foster the historical relations between them. Trade, economics and peace, and security historically define these relations.
Unit on Africa-Canada Relations (ACRE)
Africa and Canada are yet to fully utilize the potential of the relationship between them. The diverse economies, emerging markets and rich cultural heritage in Africa coupled with the strength of the Canadian economy and Canada’s commitment to sustainable development, peace and multiculturalism present opportunities for meaningful engagement that can also impact the global economy and governance.
ACRE moves the AU, member states and Canada towards realising the full potential of the relationship by addressing gaps in knowledge about the relationship and the respective parties. ACRE focuses on key areas such as trade, peace and security, sustainable development, diplomacy and culture in Africa-Canada relations.
A dearth of research on AU/Africa-Canada relations and the unlimited potential of the relationship exists. Where it exists, such research is not holistic, not interdisciplinary and does fails to objectively examine the relationship. The gap in knowledge on Africa-Canada relations robs the parties of the possibility of establishing closer ties and hampers the development of coherent policies and strategies that could benefit them.
ACRE conducts rigorous academic research, policy analysis, and promotes public engagement between stakeholders in Africa and Canada. The Unit is a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the development of innovative solutions to shared challenges. It bridges knowledge gaps, promotes mutual understanding, and helps unlock the full potential of Africa-Canada relations in a rapidly changing global economy.
ACRE contributes to better mutual understanding between the AU, its member states and Canada and creates opportunities for collaboration between Africa and Canada.
